MULTITRACK MIXING
Years One - Three | UW309814
Throughout my studies, I have focused my work towards DAW operation: beginning with music production techniques. At the beginning of the degree, it was possible to access the college's Eastlake designed studio's for recording, mixing, and mastering. At this time, I made use of the facilities with friends and began to record demo tracks with the hopes of forming a performing band.
The purpose of these modules were to encourage the development of my own creative mixing techniques through practice and critical evaluation of other's work. Both creativity and high technical ability were evaluated thoroughly.
In my third year of studies, I developed a strong understanding of Pro Tools operation - specifically 'in-the-box' mixing and mastering. Due to the pandemic, course work was adapted to be complete at home. Fortunately, I had acquired industry standard audio equipment, making mixing and mastering at home possible.
LIST OF MIXED AND MASTERED TRACKS
Each sourced from the Cambridge Music Technology website.
THE BLACK CROWN
Flames
The Black Crown is an Alternative Metal band from Italy. Formed by Paolo Naverretta, this band makes full use of heavy guitar and punchy drums. This song was an excellent fit to my personal musical taste, making mixing decisions come easily. I made use of multibus mixing techniques to mix the individual components, 'Brauerize' the vocals, and create a dynamic mix.
JESSICA CHILDRESS
Slow Down
Jessica Childress is a singer, songwriter, pianist and composer based out of Los Angeles. As an artist, her powerful voice, intimate lyrics and charismatic personality have allowed her to grow within the LA music scene. This song was a challenge to mix and master, not only was this outside my typical genre of choice, but it was a live recording. I once again made use of multibus mixing techniques, and heavy use of EQ to maintain each track.
DUNNING KRUGER
Sascha
Indie band Dunning Kruger's song Sascha was a middleground selection in comparison to the first two songs. This studio recording featured many elements retained from the live take, requiring delicate mix decisions. When researching guitar mixing, Joe Baressi talks about using aux inputs to create a seperate mix of specific guitar tracks and stacking gain and distortion plugins. This was used in the chorus', I used automation to introduce and roll back to improve the dynamics of the track.
RANDOM SOMEBODY
Crazy for Me
This track was created by Audio Issues, a group focusing on helping home studio musicians and engineers. It was selected to truly challenge my mixing skills, as this forced me outside my comfort zone. I made use of all skills acquired during the mixing of the other tracks, particularly Michael Brauer's vocal processing technique. This makes use of multibus mixing, creating five aux inputs for vocal elements to be processed with individual EQ plugins and settings. This results in excellent results for vocal central music.
